Ultrasound is a very important part of the Fertility MOT investigation process providing a thorough check of the uterus and ovaries. That is why we believe that consultants who have had specialist training in fertility management should undertake it.
The ultrasound scan is an internal scan (the scan probe is inserted into the vagina) because it provides much clearer images and more detail than a trans-abdominal (scan over the abdomen) ultrasound. The scan is not painful and uses sound waves rather than X-ray.
The images of the ultrasound are displayed on a screen and the consultant will explain to you the findings during the procedure. The important structures that will be examined are the uterus and ovaries.
We will be looking for particular features that may have a bearing on your fertility. All bodies are slightly different from each other, so if any unexpected features are identified it does not necessarily mean that you will have problems in conceiving.
Your consultant will discuss your scan findings with you in detail.
